Manali is a hill station located in the Himalayan Mountains of India. The hill station is close to the northern end of Kullu Valley. The population of the Manali region is placed at about 30, 000 people. The town has a temple, the only one of its kind in the world. This is because the temple is named after Lord Manu, who according to Hindu scripture was the first man on earth.
The town is well connected by road, and has the highest motorable road in the world. This works to the advantage of the town's tourist industry, since at least a quarter of the visitors that head for the Himalayan Mountains opt to stay in the town. The town also offers a cool climate, totally different from the hot Indian summers that offer sweltering heat conditions.
In addition, Manali has hot springs, amazing religious shrines and temples and the Tibetan monks' temples. One of the places you can choose to visit is the Museum of traditional Himachan culture. This is a place that displays and informs on the art and culture of the people of the Kullu valley.
Old Manali, three kilometers from Manali, is another spot worth visiting. There are beautiful orchards and guesthouses with superb service to cater for your every need. Also, there is the Naggar Fort. It is located south of Manali, and is built of stones, rocks and intricate carvings. There is a shrine in the courtyard of the building, and tourists often stop here to shop and relax.
Manali also has the highest number of Tibetan refugees in the Kullu Valley region. Therefore, the Gadhan Gompa offers a distinctly rewarding experience as a tourist destination. You will get a chance to see firsthand the Tibetan weaving prowess, since the temple is maintained through the sale if these rugs.
Around Manali are quite a number of other attractions that you may want to visit. First, there is the Vashishat. This is a temple and a hot water spring. It's approximately three kilometers from Manali and has a natural sulphur spring. Solang Valley, "Snow Point" is 13 km from Manali and is known for its three hundred meter ski-lift. Rohtang Pass is another tourist spot. It is 3,978 meters above sea level and it can get cold even on a summer day.
